First Look: Bold Victorian Remodel

When one of our favorite San Francisco clients tapped us to remodel their Hayes Valley home we couldn’t have been more ready for the challenge! While this charming Victorian built in 1900 had great bones and plenty of original architectural details, the home had been neglected and untouched for years. Our interior design team transformed a home with cramped rooms and awkward spaces into a space designed for modern living, while honoring the original architecture of this historic San Francisco home.

Kitchen

The kitchen and dining room saw the most dramatic transformation – we removed a fireplace wall that previously divided the two rooms into tight spaces, creating an open plan layout with ample natural light. Senior Interior Designers Bekah and Lynn designed a masculine, contemporary kitchen that felt warm and inviting. Custom walnut cabinets maximize every inch of storage while Cambria countertops add the look of marble without the maintenance. Our San Francisco interior designers opted to highlight the intricate moldings, wainscoting and doors throughout the home by painting everything Benjamin Moore’s rich black ‘Onyx’ color. It’s incredible how much of an impact this design choice made, instantly adding contrast and design interest in every room.

Guest Bathroom

The black and white color palette continues in the guest bathroom with classic hexagon floor tiles appropriate for the era, a marble vanity and show-stopping oxblood ceramic tiles in the shower. Brass plumbing fixtures and walnut accents add depth and richness to the space.

Staircase

One of my favorite things about this renovation was being able to restore a historic home while also adding a modern design twist. The original stair railings and wainscoting look incredible painted black, creating a crisp contrast that draws visitors up and into the main hallway of the home.

Home Office

Since our client has a penchant for bold hues, we wanted to create an office space that was drenched in color! Custom built-in cabinetry was added to the home office and painted in a vibrant blue, along with the ceiling and trim. Walnut floors add warmth and are in keeping with the tone of the original floors.
