Swoon Worthy Bay Area Dining Rooms
As Bay Area interior designers we enjoy working on every room in the house, but dining rooms are one of our absolute favorite spaces to design! Each project is different and has it’s unique set of priorities and challenges – from contemporary, restrained rooms to layered, bold spaces, we always consider the architectural style and details of the home to ensure a cohesive end result. We curated some of Niche Interiors’ most-loved San Francisco Bay Area dining room designs below alongside our professional interior design tips illustrating how and why we approached the design for each space.
Menlo Park Residence: Contemporary with Soft Curves
This newly built, contemporary home in Menlo Park, California provided the perfect blank canvas for our San Francisco interior design team to create a dream home for this vibrant young family. They appreciate modern design and clean lines but also wanted warmth and unexpected design elements. We designed a large custom oak dining table (that was locally made by our woodworkers in San Francisco) with chamfered, curved edges that felt sculptural and simple but not stark. A statement chandelier adds a bespoke touch with hand crafted organic porcelain shades. The selection of these two furniture pieces was the foundation of the design concept for this Peninsula home, and the art and accessory selection followed. A commissioned diptych from artist Yossi Ben Abu through San Francisco gallery Stephanie Breitbard Fine Arts adds dimension and bold color to the mostly neutral space and drapery panels with a subtle pattern add softness.
Aptos Beach House: Modern + Serene
Designing and furnishing a home with incredible views is definitely dreamy but does require additional considerations when selecting furniture and light fixtures. The overarching goal of this mid-century California beach house remodel was to open up the home to the amazing sea views and bring in a lighter palette. Our interior design team thoughtfully selected chandelier and pendant options that didn’t compete with the view and blended seamlessly with the architectural details. We also considered the sightlines from multiple viewpoints in the room and opted to raise the chandelier above our standard drop to avoid impeding the view. A modern dining table in a similar wood tone to the floors and ceiling blends well and is paired with vintage leather Charlotte Perriand chairs with black metal frames that reference the steel beams throughout the home.
Hayes Valley Victorian: Moody + Eclectic
One of the first descriptions this client gave us of the vision for his new San Francisco home was “sexy and artistic”. We jumped at this unique challenge and presented him with bold interior design ideas such as painting the ceilings in oxblood red and the original trim in charcoal grey. Fortunately, he was on board and trusted us to implement the design, which included painting the fireplace mantle in a deep black and adding a graphic grey wallpaper to all of the walls. Not only did the rich paint colors add drama and interest to this dining room, it also allowed us to draw attention to the original Victorian architectural details such as the beautiful molding and high ceilings. A statement, tiered chandelier with smoked glass and metal expands on the striking design and acts as a focal point in the space. A custom bronze mirror above the fireplace bounces light around the room and doesn’t compete with the patterned wallpaper.
Woodside Estate: Transitional with a Contemporary Twist
The formal dining room in this 1920’s Woodside estate is located on one end of the expansive great room. Our first priority was selecting dining chairs that looked beautiful from all angles and that felt appropriate with the traditional architectural details designed by Andrew Mann Architecture. These upholstered chairs with graceful curves were the perfect choice. The Niche Interiors team designed a custom dining table with subtle details and a classic shape. A cerused wood finish adds an additional layer of texture and compliments the herringbone wood floors. The branching brass and glass chandelier adds a contemporary touch and references statement lighting throughout the rest of the home.
