Art Market San Francisco 2022
Art Market San Francisco is back! As interior designers we try to attend as many design and art fairs as possible. It’s a great opportunity to discover new artists and galleries, to scout potential purchases in person, and to catch up with the local Bay Area gallery owners that we collaborate with on a regular basis.
About Art Market San Francisco
Art Market is an international art fair that brings together galleries, collectors, and art enthusiasts from around the world. Founded in 2011, the fair has grown to become one of the most important events on the global art calendar. Art Market takes place annually in San Francisco and offers a diverse selection of contemporary and modern art from around the world. The fair features works by established and emerging artists across a range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media.
One of the things that sets Art Market apart from other art fairs is its focus on fostering relationships between galleries, collectors, and artists. The fair provides a platform for galleries to showcase their artists and engage with a wider audience, while also offering collectors the opportunity to discover new artists and acquire works that speak to them.
Another highlight of Art Market is its strong curatorial vision. Each year, the fair is organized around a specific theme or concept that ties the works on display together. This approach creates a cohesive and engaging experience for visitors, and allows for a deeper exploration of the various themes and issues that contemporary artists are exploring in their work.
Principal Designer Jennifer has a background in art and a passion for curating the perfect pieces for our client’s homes. Art Market is one of our favorite art fairs – with 85 modern and contemporary art galleries exhibiting from all over the world at Fort Mason. We appreciate the wide variety of artists on display, from well-established talents to emerging artists. There were so many incredible works this year we had a hard time narrowing down our highlights…
2022 Art Market Highlights
We are longtime fans of Beverly Fishman’s neon-hued geometric work – it was such a treat to see one of her pieces in person! While Fishman’s artworks look abstract, they are based on appropriated shapes, patterns, and images drawn from the pharmaceutical industry. As she noted in 2017, “Although they look abstract, my paintings are tied to problems like attention-deficit disorder, opioid addiction, anxiety, and depression. Their forms connect them to the social problems of today.”
Aili Schmeltz is a sculptor and painter that splits her time between Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, CA. She studied at UCLA, earned her MFA from the University of Arizona, and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. Schmeltz’s work explores the transformation of the California landscape through the lens of modern aesthetics using raw materials of environmental relevance.
It was hard to capture the texture of this piece in a photo – Schmeltz uses thread, acrylic and fabric dye to create layered, intricate works. The saturated color palette in this piece was one of the most eye catching at the fair.
Anthony James is a British/American artist based in Los Angeles, known for his monumental installations and sculptures. His infinity sculptures, made of stainless steel, glass, and LED lights, have shown internationally to great acclaim. James explores the concept of giving the impossible a physical existence through the use of Plato’s Sacred Geometry.
Mersuka Dopazo sees her works as a ‘travelogue from unexpected territory’. The Spanish artist creates large-scale naïve-style collages from fabric and hand-made, natural papers. These materials are sourced all over the world directly from the craftsman, from locations such as Spain and Italy. Dopazo’s works have been exhibited in the UK, Canada, Hong Kong and Europe.
Carrie Ann Plank is an San Francisco based artist working in the mediums of installation, printmaking, and painting. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from East Carolina University and her Masters of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Pennsylvania State University. Focusing on layers of sophisticated geometry, Plank examines the space of intersecting patterns. The work utilizes mathematical equations to create multiple overlapping impressions that reveal additional distinct pattern formations.
