If you live in San Francisco you are well aware of our tight spaces and awkward floor plans. Sometimes you just need an inspired solution to your design dilemma. When this is the case designers often turn to custom furniture, whether it be a unique sofa, hand-made table or built-in cabinets.

Designing a piece of furniture from start to finish provides an endless amount of options to the client and designer and a level of quality and craftsmanship that is rarely achieved with retail furniture. Read on for advice on when to splurge!

Tight Spaces. If you have a tiny bathroom or kitchen and need to maximize every last inch, custom cabinetry is the way to go. Stock vanities and cabinets come in limited sizes, and can be hard to tailor to your specific needs. Do you have an eat-in kitchen nook that barely fits a table and chairs? Built-in banquette seating can be a great option to make unusable spaces more functional.

I just came across this photo I snapped at DIFFA’s (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) Dining by Design event in November. I loved this room as a whole, but especially the clever idea of updating antique dining chairs with plastic seats and chair backs instead of the standard of reupholstering. The curves of the chair really stand out…So smart!

If you find that there just aren’t enough homes for your things, you should re-evaluate and pare down your possessions. If you can’t let go, then it’s time to introduce more storage solutions! The September shelter magazines have all arrived and I’m sharing my favorite rooms. Read on for some inspiring images for Fall, courtesy of Elle Decor and House Beautiful…

The contrasting textures and colors are grounded by light, neutral walls and sofa. Love it!

Risky move to paint the walls and built-ins with a rich, bold blue. It paid off!

The lilac color palette is soothing without being too matchy. The modern glass coffee table keeps the room light and airy.
